What Causes A Sensation Of Clogging In The Ears?

I m a 19 year old male. I weight train and do cardio workouts 6 to 7 days a week. A little over a month ago I had a cold, and about two weeks after I got over my cold I noticed my right ear felt full, and I felt pressure in it. I never have had any allergies, or sinus issues. I went to my family physician and he said there is no earwax blockage, and the ear canal and eardrum looks healthy. I haven t experienced any dizziness, nausea or hearing loss at all. I noticed that when I eat though both my ears feel full and clogged. And just today when I was working out, it s like my right ear got stuck to wear I could hear myself breath and it felt as if I were talkng louder, and then after about 10 minutes of trying to pop it, it finally went away. Ive tried decongestants and now I m taking loratadine (over the counter, not prescribed) thinking it was fluid from my cold. Also the my physician had me on a zpak for 5 days and it seemed like it didn t work bc it feels like it s back. I was wondering what this could. Thank you.

ENT Specialist 's  Response
Hi,
Welcome to healthcare magic. I had gone through your question.
I can understand your concern.
Yes, this could be fluid in the ear secondary to common cold. The Eustachian tube connects the inside ear with the back of nose. This tiny rube ventilatesa and drains the ear. Any upper respiratory infection and or inflammation could affect its function leading to fluid in the ear and ear block.
Nothing to worry, you will be fine.
I recommend the following.
1) Oral decongestant like tablet levocetrizine with phenylephrine.
2) Oxymetazoline nasal drops to promote eustachian tube ventilation.
Do not use this drops continuously for more than 6 days.
3) Valsalva maneuver: Blow air into mouth, while keeping the mouth and nose closed. You can hear a pop up sound in the ear, indicate eustachian tube opening. Then release nose and open the mouth.
Repeat this 6 to 7 times a day for 7 days.

Hope i have answered your question. If you have any questions, I am happy to help you.

Wish you a speedy recovery and good health.

Regards,
Dr. Paparaja S MBBS,MS
