What Causes A Protrusion Over Xiphoid Process On Sternum?

Xiphoid process. I have developed a large protrusion about the size of a golf ball where my Xiphoid Process is on my sternum. It has been about 2 weeks since it cropped up. I have my annual physical in 6 weeks. But frankly it hurts and appears to float vs. being attached to my middle sternum breast plate. Should I be worried?

Thanks for your question on HCM.
In my opinion it is soft tissue swelling mostly, either
1. Lipoma
2. Dermoid
3. Sebaceous cyst.
Since it is not fixed to the bone and floating under skin, bone swelling is less likely.
If it is painless then no need to worry much.
Get done ultrasound examination of local part and biopsy to confirm the diagnosis.
And if it is not troubling you then no need for hurry. You can get it checked after six weeks, at the time of your annual check up.
