What Causes A Painful Bruise On Shin?

Hi, I have a bruise on my shin that has begun to sting. I am bruised because of a fitness class that I am taking but this bruise took a couple of days to show up and I have never experienced stinging before. I was wondering if it is safe to continue exercising?
