Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Eight years ago my husband had a stroke and approximately three years later he had a heart attack damaging 72% of his heart. He has a hole in his heart and the doctors believe he manufactures blood clots. They have him on 80 mg of plavix, asprin, lipitor, fish oil and another tiny white pill I can t remember. He exercises regularly and has a good diet and is not at all over weight. However, he is a heavy drinker three out of five days a week. There is no family history of heart disease. His cardiologist advised him to consider a defibrillator but he refused. Recently a nurse told me ten years is the considered life expectancy in this situation. Can this be true or is this more the scenario of someone who does not follow diet and exercise advice?sand
Regarding your question more data is needed about his heart attack and echocardiography data. If he is suffering from heart failure (most probably yes) then the life expectancy of these patients are 50% in 10 years. But you should not worry about the life expectancy as long as he is on good medication without symptoms. His cardiac function may also improve over time.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
