What Causes A Feeling Of A Lump In The Throat And Pain In The Jaw?

Hello, for the past week I have had the feeling of a lump in my throat. When I swallow it seems to go away for a few seconds, then come back. When I drink or eat it goes away, but comes back later. I also have been having pain on the right side of my jaw, but on the inside where it is all tissue. It feels like it s bruised when I press on it, and when I move my head a certain way it hurts. I m very worried, I hope it s nothing serious and if it is hopefully someone can help.

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have symptoms of feeling of a lump in the throat and pain in the jaw which is due to inflammation of tonsils and infection of salivary gland.

Need not to worry. I would suggest you to :-

- Do warm saline gargles 3-4 times a day .

- Maintain proper oral hygiene .

- Chew on citrus substances and avoid hot and spicy food .

- For pain and inflammation take asprin or ibuprofen(if not allergic).

- Give warm compresses externally.

Consult ENT specialist (ear, nose, throat) for proper evaluation of condition and rule out causes like strep throat or acidic reflux. Doctor may order throat swab test or blood test to confirm the diagnosis. Doctor may prescribe steroid medicine, anti viral (acyclovir) or antibiotics depending upon diagnosis.

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Best Wishes,
Dr. Harry Maheshwari
