What Causes A Cough Upon Breathing Deeply?

I have asthma and an acute respiratory illness, probably the flu, since my nephew who lives with us was just diagnosed through a lab test to have flu. When I breath deeply I cough, but if I don t I get vibrations from I think my uvula. Not a big problem yet. Just curious. But this is a big problem. My 90-year-old mother is also a member of the household. How do we protect her when she is surrounded by people who probably have the flu?

Hi,

Flu is a viral disease affecting upper respiratory tract or sinuses to start with... & causes symptoms of bronchitis (causing wheezing &may lead to vibrations in uvula) which can turn in pneumonia in susceptible patients (with low resistance & secondary bacterial infection /in immunocompromised conditions like asthma). This, in turn, leads to coughing after taking a deep breath... as here fluid collects on alveoli of lungs.

You need an antibiotic course with your routine asthmatic medication. Please consult your doctor.

As far as the protection of your old mother... vaccination is the first factor in prevention (to be done before winter)... please consult her physician about that.

Maintenance of basic hygiene, keep hands clean with an antiseptic hand wash... before helping the mother/avoid droplet infection by using a mask when entering her room/let her encourage not to touch the surfaces or wash hand immediately & use a mask.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Vasudha Jayant Athavale,
