What Can Cause Sudden Itching In The Underarms?

All of a sudden I ve been having itchy underarms. Seems weird -- I ve never had skin problems, and I haven t changed anything else in my life, other than switching to a low carb diet. I m using the same deodorant and the same laundry detergent, softener, etc.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Perhaps you have a fungal infection. Sweat, heat and warmth in underarm region are conditions that are favorable for the fungus to grow. Fungal infections are usually itchy. I suggest you to use an OTC topical antifungal, e.g. Clotrimazole cream. In addition I suggest you to use an oral antihistamine, e.g. Tab. Cetrizine for symptomatic relief from itching.

Regards.

Let me know if you need any more assistance.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Itchy axillae may be due to fungal infection, like candidiasis. Excessive perspiration, wetness or soap may be the precipitating factors. Consult the dermatologist for the perfect diagnosis and proper treatment. Apply Clotrimazole powder in axillae. Antihistaminics and antifungal tablets may be taken under doctor's observation. Avoid soap while bathing. Antiseptic liquids, like Dettol may be used to cleanse the area. Keep the area dry.

Hope this helps.

Regards.
