What Can Cause Persistent Nausea, Vomiting And Reflux In An Elderly Patient?

My dad is 80 yrs old. For the last week he has had persistent nausea, worse in the mornings, uncomfortable all the time. Eating doesn t make it worse. Only actually vomited 1 X. He has reflux, but says it feels unrelated. Zofran 4 mg doesn t do much. Phenergan seemed to help some, but nausea comes back.

Hello,

I read your message and understood your medical issue.

I came across this information:
- your dad is 80
- persistent nausea, worse in the morning, lasts all day, not related to food
- has reflux but only vomited one time
- Zofran 4mg does not help
- Phenergan helps but nausea comes back

In elderly chronic nausea can be due to many causes mostly of gastrointestinal problems. I would like to know for the diseases and medical conditions your father have and what other medications he takes to treat them.

Persistent nausea can be due to gastrointestinal disorders (gastritis, GERD, hiatal hernia etc.), food allergies, gallstones, and gallbladder issues, also liver disease and pancreatitis are often presented with persistent nausea.

Furthermore, any psychological issue, migraines, and drugs cause chronic nausea.

My advice is to consult further with GI specialist and to run further diagnostic tests to detect the right cause:
- abdominal ultrasound
- liver function test
- upper endoscopy
- fecal examination for ova/parasites

As phenergan drug gives a little help maybe it is allergy or something similar.

In elderly, the most common cause of chronic nausea is a drug side effect or a chronic disease.

Antiemetic drugs may help but it is necessary to find the exact cause of the nausea. Elimination of the cause will correct nausea as well.

Hope this helped.
