What are the symptoms of underactive thyroid?

I have just been diagnosed with an underactive thyroid and prescribed medication. What symptoms should I have been looking for? I had an episode with bp 238 and my high heart rate runs high. Laboratory results indicated underactive thyroid thus the medication.

Welcome to HCM.
I appreciate your concern for the symptoms of underactive thyroid.

Incomplete data: Age, gender, thyroid hormone levels and prescribed medication not mentioned.

The symptoms suggestive of underactive thyoid (hypothyroidism) include fatigue, constipation, weight gain, inability to tolerate the cold, dry and yellowish tinged skin, change of voice and menstrual irregularities (if you are a female).

Hi, I have not been feeling well for roughly 18 years and I just got on with it until the last couple of years when I decided to go to my doctors with many symptoms pointing at an underactive thyroid. Both my maternal and paternal grandmothers suffered from this and I decided to go the doctors. I had blood tests....they came back still not feeling normal questioned this and get told it s all in my head and then got prescribed tablets for ibs!!! I hadn t been diagnosed with ibs!!! Just got told I m stressed. Really don t know what to do as I feel my quality of life isn t the best and I am only 35! Thanks, Liz

Hi, I have an underactive thyroid and am currently prescribed 50mg levothroxine. I have had IBS symptoms due to work stresses and am currently experiencing some of the typical hypo symptoms (e.g. extreme fatigue, weakness). Should I take extra tablets to counter the fact that my levels may have dropped? Or any other advice? Thanks!

I might have an underachieve thyroid my doctor says after blood lab results. They said I need to come back in 2 months to do blood labs again to make sure it is underactive, and then will go from there prescribing a medication, etc. I have a couple questions in the meantime...I drink an organic soy milk coffee drink once a day in the afternoon, and have been doing that for probably the last 10 years. That is the only soy I consumein my diet. Researching online the last few days, I am seeing that a lot of research out there says to avoid soy in general and especially if thyroid issues. What are your opinions? Thanks. Molly
