What Are The Symptoms Of Hla B27 Chromosome Disorder?

My son was admitted to the hospital today & is receiving blood transfusions due to bleeding internally. He was first taken to the ER on Monday due to diareahea blood in stools ,pain on lower right side, fever, chills. Ct scan showed an inflammation in right side colon area was tested for ceptis result was negative. Was sent home with two antibiotic perscriptions. He was seen by GI doctor yesterday & upper GI & Colonospy scheduled for July so as to not further irratate bowel now. Went to doctor after reviewing blood test from yesterday that were taken. Shows anemia increased white cell counts, blood pressure difference when taken standing then sitting & dissieness upon standing. They are using the term ulcerative colitis . My concern is I have a brother and a nephew that have been diagnosed with HLAB27 chromezone disorder could this be what is occurring with our son ? Can this test be done to determine if that is what he has going on? My sister who is deceased also suffered from Crohns desease should he be tested for this as well?

Hi. Your son is probably suffering from ulcerative colitis. For the treatment of UC, steroids 5-asa agents and other immunosuppressants are given. Both UC and crohn disease are associated with spondyloarthritides(SpA). SpA prevalence is .05-.1% in these both diseases. Main feature of SpA are sacroilitis and enthesopathy. HLA-B27 is not a chromosome disorder and this is positive in upto 70% of patients with IBD and AS. AS runs a course independent of bowel disease. So hla- b27 test is required for your son. Yes, crohn disease patient also require this test. Uveitis is also one of important disease associated with UC. Take care.
