What Are The Symptoms Of COPD?

My sister s oxygen level is compromised every year at this time. It is presently 87. She has been to Urgent Care twice and they have (tonight) sent her home a second time but have said she will have to be hospitalized if it doesn t increase considerably overnight. She is 72 years old. They gave her an oxygen treatment, more prednisone, 2 antibiotics and a nebulizer. Can you tell if this is COPD from this description? She will do anything not to be in hospital. Was there for three nights last Christmas.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Only based on oxygen saturation level in blood, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) cannot be concluded.

Symptoms of COPD are:
- Chronic cough with sputum
- Recurrent infection
- Dyspnea, wheezing
- Easy fatigue
- Weight loss
- Generalized cyanosis (bluish discoloration)

Besides you have to go through pulmonary function tests as well as x-ray chest.

Based on above symptoms and results of investigation only COPD can be concluded and accordingly treatment can be started. My advice is to consult pulmonologist to rule out COPD.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Hiren Hirpara
