What Are The Side Effects Of Using Nuvaring Implant?

I inserted my Nuvaring on 2/8/15(which I was about 2 weeks late inserting) and had unprotected sex on 2/13/15 and my boyfriend ejaculated inside me. I removed my Nuvaring on 3/1/15. On 3/6/15 I started to notice some pink/brown vaginal discharge when I would wipe and also noticed some abdominal cramping. I did bleed very lightly for one day and then the bleeding stopped. I did at times notice some blood clots. My periods typically last 3-5 days and I usually have a very heavy flow. I have never had only a one day period. I am worried that I may possibly be pregnant. Is it to soon to test or am I over thinking the situation? Please help!

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I understand your concern.
NuvaRing is a flexible plastic contraceptive ring that releases a low dose of a progestin and estrogen over three weeks.
NuvaRing regimen specifies insertion of the ring into the vagina for a three-week period, then removal of the ring for one week, during which the user will experience a menstrual period.
What bleeding you have experienced is called 'unplanned bleeding', which could range from spotting to heavy flow, when you start using the ring for the first time. Unplanned bleeding occurs most often during the first few months of NuvaRing use. Such bleeding may be temporary and usually does not indicate any serious problems.
Hence, it is important to continue using the ring on schedule.
If the unplanned bleeding or spotting is heavy or lasts for more than a few days, you need to seek medical attention promptly.
Hope the information provided would be helpful.
All the best.
