What Are The Side Effects Of Taking Balsalazide?

I have been taking 800 mg of Asacol 3 times a day over 5 years form my Crohns, and it has been well controlled. Now I find out my insurane will not cover it anymore. My doctor would like to put me on Lialda but that will cost me about $1600 a year, so we have decided to try Balsalazide 750 mg 3 tablets 3 times a day. I have read horror stories about this drug. Any suggestions? Nancy

Hi,

Balsalazide is an anti-inflammatory drug used in the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease.

Balsalazide releases active agent 'mesalazine' in the large intestine and thus, has an advantage in the treatment of ulcerative colitis. A headache, nausea, vomiting, joint pain, diarrhea, abdominal pain, fever, sore throat, trouble sleeping, or loss of appetite may occur as side effects with the use of this drug.

If any of these effects persist or worsen, you need to seek medical attention promptly by consulting your doctor.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ashakiran S,
