What Are The Side Effects Of Taking Seroflo

Hi Doctor... I am 58 year male, taking one dose of SEROFLO 250 ROTACAP daily for the last two years. Though I excercise regularly and control food habits, i have put on 4 kg over this 2 years. I am not taking any other medications or I dont have any other problems. Kindly advise if above medicine has side effect of weight gain. Regards

Thanks for posting your enquiry to Health Care Magic website,

According to SEROFLO 250 ROTACAP, this medication comprises two different substances including Salmeterol (used in prevention of asthma symptoms and symptoms of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), and Fluticasone (a synthetic glucocorticoid used as anti-inflammatory medication). This medication combination helps to control coughing, wheezing and breath shortness in asthmatic patients.

There are some evidence and reviews showing that glucocorticoid (in this case Fluticasone) may induce weight gain and food intake. For instance, Mary F. Dallman in 2004 published a paper on the side effects and metabolic influence of these kinds of medication. They highlighted that those who intake glucocorticoid are more likely to get abdominal obesity.

According to instructions posted by you and my experience in this field, my recommendations are:

1.     Continue your current medication under supervision of your doctor.
2.     Normal physical activities help to control your weight gain due to side effects of current medications use.
3.     Use more vegetables and foods enriched with high fibers in your daily nutrition.
4.     Test your urine and blood using routine and regular tests such as UA, FBS, GTT, etc.
5.     Avoid using extra sugar and carbohydrate foods.

In case facing to severe side effects of medications such as hyperglycemia, abnormal organ function tests, ask your doctor for appropriate follow up and medication substitution.

Hope you get well soon,

Regards
