Hi,
Mirena IUD (
intrauterine device) contains levonorgestrel which is used to prevent pregnancies from unprotected sexual intercourses and to treat heavy menstrual periods. Mirena IUD only contains a progestin called levonorgestrel which is similar to woman's natural hormone, progesterone. It is a T shaped plastic device that acts as a long term birth control method.
Side effects of Mirena IUD are
lightheadedness, stomach cramps or pain, breast tenderness and enlargement, irregular
uterine bleeding, nausea, vomiting, indigestion, GIT upset, bloating, changes in appetite, acnes, facial hair growth, delayed wound healing, changes in body weight, sweating, fatigue, unusual tiredness and weakness,
vaginal discharge, changes in sleep pattern, mood swings, depression, vaginal bleeding, dry mouth, changes in sexual drive, hot flashes, allergic reactions etc. If these side effects persist for long, then you should inform your doctor first for
medical help.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Zubayer Alam, General And Family Physician
