Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Started taking gabapentine about 6 days ago. It helped wean me off of Suboxone, which weaned me off of Hydrocodone. I am so happy. Have worked up to 900 mgs a day. It seems to help with my scoliosis pain but I don t like how it makes me feel--very strange. I would like to taper off so as to see if I could just do without. I wanted to start back playing tennis but don t feel confident enuf in my movement to make take that step. How do I do it, or is it not a prob since I have been on it for such a short time.
I can understand your concern. Gabapentin is an analgesic drug and the drug is used in a number of conditions like weaning off from opioids, as an anti anxiety drug, in neuropathic pains etc. The drug is a safe drug and doesn't produce dependence. You have successfully weaned off Oxycodone and then Suboxone. Now you are taking Gabapentin 900 per day. In my opinion if you are better and have no significant symptoms then drug doses can be stopped. Reduce the doses by about 150 mg every two weeks progressively and you can stop the drug in about 6-8 weeks. This would not result in withdrawal symptoms. Consult your doctor before making any change in prescription.
Thanks, hope this helps you
