Hi,

Renal transplant is a very complicated surgery, it requires a lot of immuno-supression pre and post surgery so that the chances of rejection or immune mediated reaction of the donor kidney is minimal. Defort is deflazacort its a steroid which is used to lower immune system rapidly until the effect of mofilet takes place. As you can see the dose of defcort is being reduced. Doses of defcort are titrated to body weight and creatinine levels as well as protein loss from urine. When you get a transplant the chances of rejection is very high, to minimise the effects steroids are used.

But since you have got a transplant in 2011 almost 9 years ago you should have been off steroids by now, maybe you have had complications regarding your donor kidney, you may had to undergo biopsy, kidney function test and urine investigations. Maybe there was some abnormality in the reports that's why you are on steroids. Most common cause of renal failure in a young female is SLE, 'Lupus'. Main side effects of defcort is as follows: 1 cushingoid, 2 weight gain, 3 peptic ulcers,4 increased appetite, 5 hyperglycemia. There are other steroid sparing agents for eg tacrolimus. They may help to reduce your steroids doses.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
