Hello Doctor, My question our mom has been on Ciprofloxacin for 10 days which ended last Thursday 5/18. She still however has Diarrhea. How long does that side effect last in the elderly. She will be 100 years old in 7 weeks. Thanks for any help you can provide. Ed,

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Ciprofloxacin is an antibiotic used to treat various infections including urinary tract or bowel infections. Depending on the diagnosis for which cipro drug has been prescribed, we can evaluate and manage her current symptoms.

If she is having still diarrhea, then you should change therapy as:
- Metronidazole is further suggested but need prescription from her doctor
- Tasectan to stop diarrhea
- Probiotics to stabilize intestinal flora

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Albana Sejdini
