What Are The Risks Of High Jaundice Levels?

Have a teen that has taken blood test yesterday. The doctor called today and said his blood test came back abnormal with higher than normal jaundice levels. The doctor also wants to put in an emergency referral to a gastenterologist and I want to know how concerned should I be? How severe is jaundice and can it cause death

hi.
thanks for posting query.

jaundice is usually observed when liver is not functioning properly or red blood cell is being destroyed abnormally or a gall bladder pathology.

most of the causes are treatable.
HAV, HBV, HCV, ( viral hepatitis infection), hemolytic anemia , gall stones all are causes of jaundice.

the cause should be investigated properly and managed accordingly.

wish the patient good and sound health
regards
