My daughter (Aged 18 months) have had two episodes of unresponsiveness (lasting for less than 1 minute). We consulted Dr. Lokesh Lingappa of Rainbow Hosp in Hyd. He advised EEG which revealed- Focal slowing bilateral occipital region (This sleep EEG record showed the background activity consists of symmetrical and synchronous 6-7Hz activity with amplitudes of 40-60uV. There are movement artifacts are noted. There are high voltage sharp and slow wave activity noted over bilateral occipital region with amplitude of upto 300uV.) Blood Report: Calcium- 9.6 mg/dl; Phosphorus- 7.3 mg/dl; Electrolytes(Specimen: Serum): Sodium 14o mmol/l; Potassium- 4.3 mmol/l; Chloride- 103 mmol/l There have been some behavioral changes in her like- becoming quiet at times, not responding when we call her, gives blank looks at times; have become less active; rubs her eyes; looks up at the ceiling/sky... Her doc further advised a Brain MRI if it happens again. After the last episode i.e. on 14th Jan, it has not repeated. Her doctor has prescribed Syrup- Gardenal - 3.5 ml twice a day) whereas NIMHANS has prescribed Syrup- Eptoin (5ml- once a day). Please advise which of these two medicines is going to be safe for her and whether there is any other line of treatment available. Is it curable and whether there would be any long-term side effects of these medicines?
