I AM A 78 YR. OLD FEMALE, 5 3 TALL, 145.5 LBS., IN GOOD HEALTH, EXCEPT I SUFFER FROM HYPOTHYROIDISM, AND HIGH CHOLESTEROLE, WHICH I TAKE MEDICATION FOR. THE PROBLEM IS MY LAB TESTS SHOW AN ELEVATED MEAN PLATELET VOLUME OF 11.7 I AM VERY CONCERNED, WHAT CAN I DO TO CHANGE AND LOWER THAT NUMBER ASAP? THANK YOU, JAN

Elevated mean platelet volume simply denotes that your platelets are slightly larger in size known as giant platelets. These are functionally more active and denote young platelets released from a functioning marrow. It is nothing to worry about as long as total platelet count is normal
