The main route of HIV transmission is through the sexual route in which an infected person has unprotected sex with a non infected person. With the condom broken, there is increased risk of transmission if the sexual worker is infected. Transmission is is further increased if the infected person is not on treatment, or if the uninfected person has wounds or sores on the genital region through which contamination can occur.
Fortunately, not all sexual intercourse with an infected person can lead to transmission. But then, you can't tell if you will be the unfortunate one to fall in that group that will get infected.
Post exposure prophylaxis in countries where it is applicable in the case of exposure following sex is highly recommended so as to reduce the risk of contamination. Post exposure prophylaxis is started within 72hours after the exposure.
If the post exposure prophylaxis is not available, you just have wait a little say three months to do a screening test.
