Taken Steroid Injection For Pain In Leg After Knee Replacement. What Is The Average Weight Gain?

I had a steroid injection yesterday between the L4 and L5 to ease the pain in my left leg. I have had a problem with the pain in my entire leg since knee replacement. Hopefully, the injection will be a one time procedure. Will I definitely gain weight, real weight, or will it be temporary? What is the average weight gain? Is there anything I can do to help avoid it happening? I have to work very hard at keeping my weight down and weight gain will be very depressing for me! What am I up against and how can I fix it? Thank you! Kaye T.

Hi and thanks for the query,
Considering the possibilities of complications due to prolonged steroid therapy, it might necessary to reconsider the appropriateness of long term steroid therapy. I strongly think the orthopedic surgeon should get your reevaluated for other existent treatment options that could save you from continues dependence on steroids.
Steroids have a risk, not only of overweight, but for other metabolic disorders like diabetes, bone metabolism, immune depression. Weight gain patterns differ from person to the other, thus predicting might be difficult. however, this depends on the duration of steroid use, type of steroid and dosage of the steroids.
Thanks and best regards,
Luchuo, MD.
