Surgery For Fractured Leg. Have Blood Clots In Leg And Lungs. Have Diabetes, High BP And Cholesterol

My husband fractured his hand at work in July of 2011. He had surgery in which pins were inserted and then developed DVTs in the left leg and PEs two days after the surgery. He returned to work in December of 2011 and instantly fractured his first metatarsel on his left foot in December 2011. He went back to work in February 2013 and then fractured his second metatarsel in his left foot. They keep telling him he has edema in all five of his metatarsels. He has had blood clots in the left leg before and after that and also in his lungs. He has been diabetic for about 10 years. Also has high blood pressure and high cholesterol. We can't figure out what to do or who to see about figuring out what is going on. Charcots foot has been ruled out and he does not have neuropathy in his feet. His pulse is fine also. What could we be dealing with here? We feel that we can't treat this until we have a diagnosis. He has ha a decade scan that came back fine. He has seen a podiatrist, hematologist,endocrinologist and orthopedic. None of them have an answer. Please help

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

From the description, it is evident that your husband is becoming victim to repeated fractures without any major injury.

This implies that his bones are weak. I suggest you to get
* Serum Calcium levels estimation -both protein bound & ionized calcium
* Serum Vitamin D3 levels
* DEXA scan or BMD (bone mineral density) test

In the mean time, Use regular daily supplementations of CALCIUM & VIT D3, Calcium rich diet and regular physical activity to keep the bones and muscles strong.

A thorough evaluation is needed to know the exact underlying cause for recurrent fractures.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
