Suggest Ways To Manage Child With Depression And Self-harming Tendencies

My grandson attempted Sucide when he was 16 , he is now 23, and seens ok. But his sister who was in the 7th grade begin to cut herself soon after. She seems do this more noticeably around the time of year. She is now in 9th grade. She doesn t sleep and is now not doing homework and wants to stay home. She has a group of friends that claim to hate people. She always seems depressed. My son called and said she had really cut her arms bad and doesn t know what to do. I suggested counseling for her and her parents. What do you think I am really worried.

Hello and welcome.

Yes, counseling is mandatory. A doctor who can prescribe anti-depressants, etc; will be required. Depression, schizophrenia, etc; are all possibilities that need to be diagnosed/ruled out after a detailed evaluation.

If she continues to cut herself, she can also be battling suicidal tendencies. This could be familial and I would strongly suggest a doctors involvement at the earliest.

Best wishes.
