Suggest Treatment For Withdrawal Symptoms Of Lisinopril

my doctor has taken me off of my lisinopril because we figured out it was causing my dry hacking cough that i had developed for several months. Have been off it for a few weeks and the doctor didnt give me another medication to replace it. I have started feeling different, blurred vision mostly, some anxiety. more tired. My readings without the meds have been . top number any where between 140-160 one at 170. should i continue to stay off the medication? very concerned. doc didnt want to see me back for 4 YYYY@YYYY . Thankyou.

Hello,

Cough is a common side effect of Lisinopril. If the patient develops cough there are a few options. One is to substitute Lisinopril with another drug similar to it but that does not cause the cough. This would be a drug in the family of Valsartan which has similar effect as Lisinopril on high blood pressure but does not cause cough.

Another option is to stop Lisinopril and take another antihypertensive like hydrochlorthiazide, or metoprolol or amlodipine... it is the doctor that needs to decide which of these is the best choice in your case, depending on your age, race and other conditions you might be having.

Please note that a cough from Lisinopril might take a few weeks to settle down. On the other hand Lisinopril is not the only cause of cough so having a good examination to rule out other causes of cough like a lung examination and a chest x-ray might be advisable.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
