Suggest Treatment For Vomiting And Diarrhea In A Child

Hi, I have a 1 yr old son who has just got over 10 days of being poorly vomiting and diarrhea but now can not walk and is in pain if we try to stand him up. We had x rays y day but all seems fine. He is genrally healthy and not normally a cry baby. There is no swelling, redness, temperature or anything else wrong with him apart from him not being able to walk... can you help? What is the worse case scenario if there is one?? I have just rang NHS direct but they couldnt help and just said to keep an eye on him. Thanks

Pediatrician 's  Response
Hi,

We have to see whether there is a true weakness of the lower limbs or not. Ask him to get up from sitting position without support, and to raise both legs (one at a time) straight, without support while lying down in the bed. If he is not able to these, there is probably weakness and we need further evaluation to rule out GBS or electrolyte imbalance. This has to be done without delay.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Muhammed Aslam T. K., Pediatrician
