Suggest Treatment For Symptoms Of Schizophrenia

I am 21 from north Africa. My mother suffered from schizophrenia, when she was having my older brother she was taking her medication as she was paranoid about someone might hurt her baby. Given that she wasn t honest with my father... yet my father seen her as she is he didn t give in for the people who advised him that he should consider divorce. Me on the other hand my mother didn t intake any medications while pregnant with me. moving fast forwards, me and my poor brother had to go through her manic episodes as she stopped taking her medications with the assured failure of every intereference trial of her father and mine. movIng fast forward she died in her early 30s due to appendicites which her physician at the time confused it with food poisoning. Fast forward my brother mood started to change drastically in his teenage years... he used to hit me and surely I got him back nevertheless our grandpa started getting very sick and my aunts as well which made it worse when my brother seen my aunt dead in her bed for a whole day with no one knowing it and he had to carry her ... he fought with one of the neighbours who threatened him ..he started getting really depressed and stopped talking or sleeping and his mood was so dark and scary .... then it just escalated and now he is diagnosed with schizophrenia. And it is hereditary as my grandpa had it so did my 2 aunts, two of nieces and my mother. It was when he was 19 ... now I am a bit terrified that it might happen to me... I dont have these symptoms my brother had, eventhough I get into somehow dark moodes as I am homosexual and not that confident with my looks ... I dont hear any but my inner voice .... which is a bit judgemental... I do have trouble with sleep ... I over sleep as in my head i translate less sleep equals schizophrenia ... I know I am not a prophet unlike what my brother thinks of himself... I am somehow sensitive yet I can calm m self down ... I am capable of talking very well but sometimes I talk to fast that I pronounciate wrongfully.... I am also a loner as i dont have much friends .... I just sit alone ... also when my brother stopped taking his medications it was all on me to give it to him in his food as to get him to sleep and it was all on me to calk him down then I had to leave him till my father was back from a business trip that he had him hospitalized as he used to hit people on he streets and hold a knife threatening to kill us ... so.. do I have to worry or am I way over it .... next May I ll be 22yrs ... and if I have to worry ... what should I do next?

Hello,

However looking at your symptoms I do not see any indication of schizophrenia which normally manifests with psychotic symptoms like your brother.

You may still need psychiatric help as an anxiety disorder may be at play, but it is a common issue which can be helped through psychotherapy and medication.

Regarding the age I can't say that you are past the threshold for developing schizophrenia, it may manifest after the age of 22, but as I said there is no real indication from your symptoms.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Olsi Taka, Neurologist
