Suggest Treatment For Swelling In Jaw Line

I had a facelift (lower) - result are good overall - healed very well... EXCEPT - at 6 weeks (now) I have what appears to be swelling under the both sides of my jawline - which becomes most obvious when I look down or turn my head at a downward angle. I didn t have this before the surgery. I realize it s likely the gland area. The glands themselves are not visible - but there is a fullness that I didn t have before. I m using my hair to hide it - but I didn t pay 13K to hide my jawline. Is this the last phase of swelling that is most obvious now as the upper face is now pretty much normal - or is it a gland issue - and if so, what are the options for that?

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern.

As per your query you have swelling in jaw line after 6 weeks of lower face lift which is because of seroma or a salivary gland leak depending upon location. If it is at the jaw angle area near or under the ear, it may be a parotid gland leak. If it is in front of the ear along the jawline closer to the mouth, then it is definitely a seroma.

I would suggest you to go for fluid examination as a seroma will eventually resolve itself with repeated aspirations as needed. A parotid gland leak usually will also but may require other methods, at times surgical, to make it stop. Herniation of the submaxillary gland, a gland that produces saliva is another cause for this. Antisialogogues and plastic surgery is treatment option in that case.

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Best Wishes,
Dr. Harry Maheshwari
