Hi,

It would be best NOT to use a laxative daily for this length of time, it stops the bowel/intestines from working properly on their own. Using too many laxatives can actually cause constipation in the long run.

She should have an ultrasound to take a look at her stomach and an X-ray of the back even if there is no back pain.

The nerves in the back help control the bowel. Instead of using medication daily that may cause problems, if constipation is the problem then she should have increased fluids (need to drink a lot of water) and fiber (fruits, vegetables, whole grain rice o pasta, can also add a fiber supplement- eg benefiber, cetrucil).

Summary:

(1)needs X-ray of her back and ultrasound of her stomach/abdomen

(2)laxatives should not be used continuously for a long period.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Michelle Gibson James, General & Family Physician
