Suggest Treatment For Sore Throat And Pain In Tongue

Hi, I have been experiencing severe pain on my tongue for past week or so. The pain is bad enough that it does not disappear even with hydrocodone/tylenol combo. Also, the throat is a bit sore and have had some trouble swallowing. No cough or runny nose or other cold symptoms to speak of . . Canker sores also present inside of lips on both top and bottom. Any thoughts on what is going on here? (39 yr old male)

Hello,

I can understand your concern. Canker sores can be very painful and can be multiple in number and at multiple sites in mouth. Only painkillers may not help you to relieve pain.

I would advise you to start taking Vitamin supplements suck as Vitamin B complex (B-Folcin) twice a day for at least 10 days. In addition, apply topical Kenacort 0.1% gel to the ulcerated areas 2-3 times a day. This will help in faster healing. You cal also apply Benzocain Gel (Mucopain) before meals so that the anesthetic effect of the gel will help in decreasing pain while eating and swallowing.

Sometimes these ulcers can be present on the palate and back of the tongue which may make you feel that you have pain in throat. The pain in throat should disappear along with ulcers.

If they do not disappear in next 7 days, then visiting a dentist for physical examination of ulcer sites and types is necessary. In addition, if these multiple ulcer episodes come frequently in a year, then I would advise you to go for allergy test and vitamin levels testing through blood tests.

I hope this information helps. Thank you for choosing HCM. Let me know if you have follow up questions.

Best,
Dr. Viraj Shah
