Suggest Treatment For Sleep Disorder

I am 53 years old, moderately active, and work a full time job. I get 7-8 hours of restless sleep a night. I have problems going to sleep, and problems getting up. I am always tired during the day. I did at one point had a Vitamin D deficiency. I take Vit-D every day, along with my calcium and B-complex. Why am I so tired all the time?

Hello,

It looks like 'restless' sleep is the cause of your feeling tired all the time. This type of symptom can be indicative of some kind of depression or anxiety that keeps you awake. It can be PTSD or some trauma (emotional or mental) that subconsciously makes you restless.

Good sleep is very important for a healthy life. You need high quality sleep. De-stress yourself & stay well hydrated. Do not let thoughts race your mind.

Give yourself time. Take naps in recess time(or go for a 10 minutes walk, stay away from computer screen). Don't waste this time on others. Eat a healthy snack, chew gum, eat candy, while at the job.

Give some time to the decor of your bedroom, choose soothing blue for bedroom hues, curtains & other materials preferably white. Keep your room fragrant when you return from work. Put few fresh scented flowers at least twice a week. Buy a new comfortable mattress.

Avoid taking illegal drugs, caffeine, alcohol or addictions if any. Cut on carbohydrate. High protein diet reduces fatigue, avoid oily junk food. Calories intake shouldn't be too low. Psychiatric & some other medicines cause insomnia. You have not mentioned what medicines you take.

Medical conditions that cause tiredness are anemia, diabetes, thyroid issues, vitamin deficiencies & developing CAD, coronary artery disease. Heart diseases (tachycardia, angina, valve issues) trigger tiredness, it goes only after you take rest or take medicines. Neglect may cause worsening of the symptoms.

You are suggested to go for a thorough health check-up, including cardiac check-up. Get all required investigations done. Your treatment will depend upon the pathology detected.

In the meantime, continue to take the vitamins you have been taking(after breakfast), you can add Vitamin E (Evion - 400). Take food rich in vitamin D, E calcium, zinc & iron. Exercise regularly.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K, General & Family Physician
