Suggest Treatment For Shooting Pain In The Head And Neck

I have a shooting pain on the left side of the back of my head that shoots a pain from my neck...behind my ear and to the top of my head. I can push on pressure points behind my ear that relieve the pain. I am thinking that it could be a pinched nerve. Cracking my neck gives brief relief. I am an active 53 year old female and lift weights at the gym. Ibuprofin stops the pain temporarily. Any ideas on a diagnosis?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

As per your history, it may be due to occipital neuralgia.

For further assessment you may require MRI neck and nerve conduction studies after consultation.

For pain you can take tablet acetaminophen.

You may require tablet gabapentin after consultation.

Do regular physical therapy.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Shyam B. Kale, General & Family Physician
