Suggest Treatment For Severe Knee Pain

I developed a sore right knee about a week and a half ago - hurt to walk, warm to touch, top of kneecap sore. Can bend back no problem, but hurts when rising from chair and is painful at times. Have used ice packs and use compression bandage which helps. Particulary sore after awakening in morning but no trouble sleeping. On the day it started I had been walking as I do on a daily basis. I went to my local doctor who said I had patella quadriceps tendonopathy and she gave me some literature with exercises to do which I have been doing but find them painful. I am 64 years old and definitely not an athlete. I just wanted a second opinion as i don t seem to be getting any better.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

According to my opinion at your age, these types of pain is due to age-related joint destruction. However, pain in the morning is a feature of rheumatoid arthritis. So better to rule out it by blood tests.

Your doctor diagnosed it as tendinopathy, but we have to rule out osteoarthritis also. Please do x-ray knee joint and consult another orthopedic doctor for the second opinion. For pain relief, you can use hot compression along with tablet diclofenac. You can use knee caps also while walking.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Hiren Hirpara
