Suggest Treatment For Severe Depression

Good Afternoon, I am a 73 year senior citizen. I have to back up a few years. My first wife had a lot of health problems, too many to list. I retired in 2007 to stay home and assist her until her passing in 2011. Of course , I went through a bit of depression, but I stayed active by volunteering in any way I could, which was very good for me. Two years later, I remarried and was enjoying everyday things. Winter of 2015, her son had a serious auto accident, and lived. He would drive from VA. to PA. always drunk, he went to jail for several months and lost his license for 1 year. However, he also had some problems in VA. and was given an additional year suspension which will end in Feb. 2018. He has been living with us all this time. He has a job locally, but has to be taken to and from his job. This has put a big strain on his mother and I and when I say anything to her, she asks me not to get upset about it. When he is home he lounges on the couch, has the tv on 24 hrs. watching all the cop shows, ID, drugs shows, all the WWS shows, plays games on his phone and sleeps on the couch. His mother, (my wife) or I want to watch tv, we do so in our bed room with the door closed. During the day she watches all the court shows or 3 of her favorite movie channels. As an escape, I retreat to an empty bedroom and am on the computer for hours on end. Over the past 2yrs. I have had some serious health problems which have only compounded me. If you have any suggestions for me PLEASE email me. Thank you, Ron

Hello,

I wish I knew what the problems with your health were. Could your depression have become active again? I feel certain you know the symptoms:

-low energy
-excessive sleeping
-weight loss or gain
-the feeling of worthlessness
-isolating(being alone for hours or days on end).

Attempt to push yourself to become more active. Seek out activities that you enjoy that get you out of the house. Return to volunteering to keep yourself busy and boost your sense of self-worth by helping others.

Can your stepson move to the empty bedroom so that you and your wife can reclaim the living room? Can he be given household chores that he is responsible for on regular basis?

He needs to get professional help with his alcoholism. If these suggestions are not helpful, you ought to see your primary care doctor see whether you may benefit from an antidepressant.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Arnold Zedd, Pediatrician
