Suggest Treatment For Severe Cough And Fever In A Child

Hi. I took my son to the doctors yesterday as he has had a temp for 3days now. He s complaining of stomach ache (he has very smelly trumps) and headache also. He s very clingey and that is not like him at all. He also has a terrible cough which started the same time as his fever. He s completely off food but still drinking. The doctor checked his eye ears throat temp then felt and listened to his tummy. Also took a wee sample from him. It s nearly 24hours later after the appt and he is still complaining of all of these symptoms. My doctor told me to carry on with calpol and ibuprofen, but this brings him temp down for an hour each time at most. Any advice? Many thanks

Hello, Thanks for the query.
I have seen the details. It appears he has been prescribed only antipyretics, which will definitely bring down the fever for about few hours (till the effect lasts). But since no antibiotic has been given, the cause (infection) is unlikely to be controlled. My suggestion is continue the Ibuprofen+ paracetamol combination 3 to 4 times a day and also give adequate oral rehydration (ORS), which help in maintaining proer hydration and keep the child in good condition. You may give Cefixime twice a day for 5 to 7 days and a cough suppressant preparation containing Dextrometharphan 3 times a day. Or wait for your doctor's advice. thanks.
