Suggest Treatment For Severe Constipation Post Surgery

Hello. My obgyn found a polyp hanging from my uterus and we have surgery to remove at the end of the month. He asked me about bowel movements. I told him throughout life they have been one extreme to the next always. However for the past month, I have been extremely constipated. He recommended Metamucil so I have been taking 5 pills/day for 2 weeks. I have myself three enemas in the past 2 weeks and the first time I did it I couldn t even get it in I was so backed up today I had a movement but only one small piece. My right side was enlarged, but is not as big as it was. Please let me know your opinion. I feel miserable. A friend recommended magnesium citrate. But another friend his dad used it aND it caused projectile vomiting. What do I need to do for relief until I can get into a gi Dr?

Hi.
Thanks for your query.
Noted the history and understood your concerns.
The constipation may need different types of laxatives or sool soteners or enema as the effects vary from person to person.
Since Metamucil is not working nor did the enemas I would advise you the following:
First of all get an X-ray of the abdomen to see if you have fecoliths in colon or any fecal load that is not being evacuated.
If this is present you need a water and soap enema in the traditional way for it to be effective.
Once the bowel is well cleansed, it would be prudent to get the different laxatives or stool softeners and continue with the one that is most effective for you; like Cremaffin plus, Fabolite that contains Isabgol husk.
Also identify the foods and beverages that have stool hardening effect and stop these altogether.
Stress and anxiety too have direct effects on GI and see to control these.
Also get the blood and stool tested, watch for diabetes or hypothyroidism as these cause gastroparesis.
Ans if present, get these treated well.
Consult your Gynecologist then, go ahead with the Surgery for polyp from uterus.
