Suggest Treatment For Severe Bronchitis

Hi my D-dimer is 289 and my potassium is .2 from being too low. I have acute asthmatic bronchitis and pleuracy. I have been to the ER twice. The first time my magnesium was off and I had to take 1 magnesium pill. I still feel like crap with nebs, prednisone and Percocet. I have type II Diabetes since 2011 and am on Levimir and Novolog. I also have chronic tendenosyvitis in my left ankle which is now hurting more than normal. They did a CT of my lungs and it was clear. I m scared. Not sure what to do next. Help.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

It is understandable to be concerned re any prolonged symptoms. The potassium is on the low side of normal according to what was written but it is still within normal range.

D dimer is mainly used to diagnose pulmonary embolism (PE), if it is negative then PE is not likely to be present. When it is positive, however, the opposite is not true since many things can cause a positive result. The CT would have assessed for a clot.

D dimer goes up with inflammation of the body, liver or heart disease, pregnancy, trauma, high triglycerides. These are some of the reasons for the increase.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Michelle Gibson James, General & Family Physician
