Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am getting hives, itching and just plain crawly skin apparently from my newish statin. this is the second one my MD and I have tried. I am going out of town. Can I just stop it until I get back and can see her or do I have to taper? It is Lovastatin YYYY@YYYY
Understanding your concern. As per your query you have symptoms of recurring and itchy hives which seem sto be due to allergic reaction to statin group of medications. In cas eof hives it is important thing is to find the trigger factor and treatment can be started acordingly.
Need not to worry. I would suggest you to give cold compresses to hives several times a day to prevent from swelling and itching and take over the counter antihistamine drug like benadryl. You should avoid medication if you feeling ok without that and start with alternate course of medication after proper prescription. If symptoms still persist the consult dermatologist for proper examination and treatment. Doctor may prescribe other steroid cream ( mometasone), anti inflammatory drug or drugs that can suppress immune system. Stay in cool environment .
Hope your concern has been resolved.

Best Wishes, Dr. Harry Maheshwari
