Suggest Treatment For Persistent Itch On The Toes

The second toe on both feet itch. There is no fungus or bacterial issue. I have tried cream for shingles and cortisone cream with no change in degree of itching. I do not have any autoimmune diseases. I do have a hypothyroid condition and am on 175 mcg daily and have been taking Wellbutrin 450 mg for almost 4 years.

Hello,

Persistent itching on the toes when you do not have any fungal/bacterial infection or any autoimmune disease but have history of hypothyroidism; hypothyroidism causes dry skin and hence triggers itching. You are suggested to take care of your hygiene. Apply cooling agents like calamine or Soframycin ointment on the area affected. Keep your skin moisturized. Ice packs and topical anesthetics that contain pramoxine are also effective. You can take non sedating antihistamines, levocetirizine for relief, orally at bed time.

You are taking Wellbutrin 450 mg for almost 4 years. Wellbutrin is a medication that causes side effect called formication, sensation of small insects crawling on (or under) the skin when there is nothing there. It may also cause pricking, tingling, pins and needles sensation. You are suggested to consult your treating doctor so that the dose can be monitored or medicine replaced by other medication that suits you better.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
