Suggest Treatment For Persistent Exhaustion While On Adderall

I have been taking adderall for five years with no prescription. It is costing me a lot of money. If I don t take them I get tired while driving and anytime I eat. I went to a couple different doctors about getting tired all the time but they didn t help me out much. Just said I need sleep studies.

Hello and welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Adderall contains a combination of amphetamine and dextroamphetamine.
These are central nervous system stimulants that affect chemicals in the brain and nerves that contribute to hyperactivity and impulse control.

From your description i deduct that you may have a condition called Narcolepsy.Adderal is indicated for the treatement of Narcolepsy.

Considering this fact,i agree with your doctors for the sleep studies.
The polysomnogram (PSG) and the multiple sleep latency test are considered essential in confirming a diagnosis of narcolepsy and will be very helpful for the right treatement of your actual symptom.

If the sleep test confirm the diagnosis of Narcolepsy, than the amphetamine-like stimulants(Adderal)in the right dosage or antidepressant drugs are very important to treat your persistent exhaustion.

If the sleep test exclude the diagnosis of Narcolepsy, than i suggest to do the thyroid test(TSH,fT3 and fT4) to see if you have Hypothyroidism.

Hypothyroidism or low thyroid is another condition that can cause tiredness or exhaustion and can give an explanation for your symptoms.
In this case the thyroid hormone replacement therapy will help you to treat your persistent tiredness.

Hope this is helpful.
Let me know if i can assist you further.
