Suggest Treatment For Pancreatitis And Diabetese

My husband has had diabetes for maybe 15yrs now. He has had pancreatitis, retinal eye detachment, and sores on his foot that will not heal. He is on 4 different diabetic meds. Still his sugar is high. Probably in the 200 s now. His personality has changed drastically. He moved out 2 1/2 months ago. Anything I do makes him very angry and he had begun punching walls. If I am happy and quiet with a smile on my face, he is ok. If he just sees me have a sad expression, or have any inflection in my voice, it antagonizes him and he storms off. Can anything be done for this? It really is not like him. He has always been a very loving and caring man with a lot of patience. Not anymore. I do not recognize him at all. Thank you, Nancy

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

I can understand your present situation. Regarding the details you provided about your husband, poorly controlled diabetes has caused the foot ulcers, retinal detachment. Pancreatitis might be causing the raised blood sugar levels. CT scan abdomen is suggested for better understanding. I suggest you visit his current physician under whom he is getting treatment and discuss the issue. There might be need of changes in medicine or dosage along with dietary changes.

Some investigations are needed to be done to understand the details. Behavioural changes can be due to many reasons. The health condition he is in currently can be the main reason. I suggest you consult a psychiatrist for this, counseling sessions help a lot. Also as his family I suggest you stay positive and support him, talk to him in this difficult time as this is definitely going to help him come out of the physical and mental stress.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Manisha Auradkar, General & Family Physician
