Suggest Treatment For Pain And Swelling Above Ankle After An Ankle Sprain

My 15 year old daughter is a track and field athlete, hurdles and sprints in particular. At the state meet two weeks ago, she says she had a 'messy' hurdles run and clipped her lead leg quite hard on the last hurdle. Shortly after, she began complaining about pain in her ankle/calf starting just above the ankle itself and continuing along the outside of her calf halfway up to her knee. The onsite medical staff said it was likely just a high ankle sprain from the way she would have landed after hitting the hurdle. They said it should take 5-6 weeks to heal completely, but the swelling should go down within the week. This was Saturday, June 5th. Today, she approached me again saying it still hurt just as bad as it did two weeks ago. When I looked at it, the swelling has almost completely gone down in her foot, but her calf is still quite swollen, and her leg is bruised where she says it hurts. It's painful/bruised in a single strip down the outside of her leg and she won't let me touch it because it's so sensitive. She's been icing it on and off for two weeks, has it in a compression stocking and braced with a tensor. She has a prescription for Naproxen, but she says it doesn't help very much. And it's a constant pain; it gets worse when she applies weight to it, or someone presses on the sore muscle, but there is still a dull ache that she feels even when resting it. She's refrained from all sports for now, and has missed the last 6 physical education classes. So my question is, should I go to the clinic again? The last doctor told her the swelling would go down in a week, yet it still hasn't. Is this unusual?

Hai
Thank you for asking HCM.
I have gone through your query. As she is having pain while weight bearing fracture of distal part of shin bones should be ruled out. It is better to have a physical examination with an orthopedician and a x ray of shin bones in two projections for this. Hair line fractures can be possible in such situations and in such cases application of casting or braces and immobilization will be needed. She can take over the counter analgesics like ibuprofen or aspirin, ice pack application locally and keep the legs elevated till consulting the doctor.
Hope this may help you. Let me know if anything not clear.
Thanks.
