Suggest Treatment For Insomnia

My Kaiser doc has taken me off of ambien because of my age(65)... have been on 5 mg for over 7 years...family history of insomnia. Excellent physical shape but when my head hits the pillow my mind starts to race...have tried everything..doc put me on 2 different antidepressants...only made me dizzy and had an extreme dry mouth. my mom and brother are both on Xanax ..seems to work for them...right now don't get to sleep before 2 am and then only after a shot of vodka(am not a drinker) but feel horrible in the morning.Have tried every single over the counter product there is! Ambien worked so well for me .. any suggestions??Think xanax would be an option? i can"t change health care providers until next October...

HI
Thanks for using healthcare magic

I think, you can take melatonin or xanax. Either of them would be good option for you. With melatonin, chances for dependence would be less and you would get sleep in normal circadian rhythm. In case of xanas, chances of tolerance or dependence will be there. According to your age, i would suggest melotonin as sleeping pills. Rest you can discuss with your doctor.

Thanks
