Suggest Treatment For Insomnia And Numbness In Left Arm At Night

when I sleep at night, which is a story in itself. I have terrible insomnia. My left arm and hand go to sleep and remain numb for hours. I am 64 yrs. old and am very young in my view of life. I am very social, maintain a great weight and take good care of myself. I have had many surgeries due to having SLE. In 2013 I had back surgery, lumbar. I had five fusions, three decompressions and two donor bones. I still have considerable pain but I can now move without the use of a walker or cane. My right hip is also replaced. I have tried changing positions etc. I have done everything for the insomnia as well. Please see if you have any ideas. God Bless, thank you. Wendy

Hi,

Insomnia and numbness in the left arm at night may have different causes. Insomnia can be caused by a variety of factors such as stress, anxiety, depression, chronic pain, medication side effects, and sleep disorders such as sleep apnea or restless leg syndrome.

Numbness in the left arm can be caused by nerve compression or injury, carpal tunnel syndrome, circulation problems, or underlying medical conditions such as diabetes or peripheral neuropathy. To address your insomnia, some non-pharmacological options to consider include establishing a regular sleep schedule, limiting caffeine and alcohol intake, creating a relaxing bedtime routine, and creating a comfortable sleep environment.

You may also consider cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), which can help you identify and change negative thought patterns and behaviors that may be contributing to your insomnia. For the numbness in your left arm, it may be helpful to talk to your doctor to rule out any underlying medical conditions that may be contributing to this symptom.

Your doctor may recommend nerve conduction studies or imaging tests to evaluate the health of your nerves and blood vessels. Depending on the underlying cause of your symptoms, your doctor may recommend medications, physical therapy, or other treatments to help manage your symptoms. Develop a comprehensive treatment plan that addresses your unique needs and concerns with your doctor.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Priyanka, General & Family Physician
