Suggest Treatment For Fever, Sore Neck, Shoulder Pain And Headache

Hi, My son has been sick with high temps starting from Friday last week. He has been complaining of sore neck and shoulder pain, head aches, cough that is getting worse he is now spitting up light green flem. We have been to our local doctor two days ago. The doctor didn t say what she thought he has just gave me a script of Amoxycillin (Cliamox) 4ml three times a day. I have been giving him 2-4 puffs of Ventolin when needed. His last temp was last night of 38.7c. I have been using paracetamol and ibuprofen for his temps. He is 6 yrs old. Should I take him back to doctors or to the hospital?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Your son appears to be having respiratory tract infection. Most of the respiratory tract infections are caused due to viruses which do not need any antibiotic and they are self limiting however green sputum which he is producing is a sign of bacterial infection and the antibiotic prescribed is fine and is for that only.

Please give him steam inhalation, paracetamol and some expectorant cough syrup which will help him to bring out the collected sputum in lungs. If his fever is coming down or if there is no fever then it means that he is improving. If he continues to have fever then do take him for review. Cough may linger on for some more days and you need not worry for that.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Anoop Kumar, General & Family Physician
