Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
We are surrounded by woods full of deer. Each year my husband gets bit by 10 to 20 ticks! He appears to be hypersensitive to the tick bites as they causes a big red lump the size of a silver dollar. The site itches and takes weeks to go away. I feel he should see our PCP, but he said there is no need. He has major health problems and it is difficult to determine if he has new symptoms. He does not run a fever and never gets the bulls eye rash. We live in NC on the VA border. What test could be done to find out if the bites have caused a problem which should be treated? Thank you, Teresa
I understand you're concerned about your husband getting tick bites. In this case, I probably agree with your husband. Lyme disease is not very common in your area (though there are cases), and only if the tick was on him for more than 36 hours, and you kept the tick and either you or the doctor could identify it as a deer tick.
I recommend he be seen by his doctor and possible be started on antibiotics. Other diseases that he could get from ticks in your area are Ehrlichiosis and Spotted Fever, but there is no need to treat for these because of a tick bite unless he develops symptoms like fever or rash.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Aaron Branch, General & Family Physician
