Suggest Treatment For Fever And Ear Ache.

Hi Dr Grief

I have recently finished a one week course of antibiotics (Augmentin) for sinusitis and previous to this I was prescribed an ear spray (Otomize) to treat an ear infection in my right ear. Despite this, I still have a fever (which has continued for nearly two weeks now, on and off), pain under my eyes, ear pain, little energy when climbing stairs etc., sore aching muscles and bones and a 'heavy' feeling head which is more painful towards the lower back and feels on some occasions slightly numb-like. My head has been checked for legions by a GP but nothing was found.

I am just wondering whether it is worth heading back to the GP despite my reluctance to take another course of antibiotics or whether it is worth waiting to see if the symptoms go away by themselves? I am a 25 year old female, generally fit and healthy with no history of serious medical illness in my family.

Many thanks.

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have symptoms of fever and earache which can occur due to accumulation of ear wax, ear fluid, ear infection to more serious condition like acoustic neuroma. Need not to worry. Avoid touching or pricking ear with any sharp object. You should do tepid sponging along with paracetamol to suppress fever. If your symptoms and episodes of earache are getting frequent then you should consult ENT specialist and start treatment after prescription. Doctor may order certain test like audiometery , CT scan ,MRI , low and high pitched ringing to rule out conditions like hearing loss , exposure to loud noises , earwax build-up , middle ear infection. Doctor may treat it according to the diagnosis , may prescribe medicine antibiotics. Doctor may prescribe drug like eperisone , muscle relaxant and sedatives. Maintain hygiene and avoid pricking it with sharp object.

Hope your concern has been resolved.
