Suggest Treatment For Esophageal Ulcer

My husband recently found out that he has an oesophegeal ulcer which could become cancerous if neglected. Nothing has been said about diet, etc. How serious is this and how should he be treating this besides taking a med like Aciflex (not sure of the spelling)? I am really concerned and not sure what to do. Thank you for your assistance.Dasha Seregin

IF YOUR HUSBAND IS DIAGNOSED AS ESOPHAGEAL ULCER THEN IT MAY BE DUE TO SEVERE REFLUX DISEASE.
Start a coarse of PPI that is TAB NEXPRO 40 MG TWICE A DAY FOR ATLEAST 6-8 WEEKS.
And Diet less of spicy and oily food.
QUIT alcohol and smoking -Strictly.
Less stress and proper sleep.

Gastroenterologist Dr. Tayyab Malik's  Response
Thank you for posting your query.

more history and data would have been suitable like
age? how was ulcer diagnosed? biopsy was done or not? biopsy result? is he suffering from GERD or diabetes OR AIDS? his medications (if any)?

differential for esophageal ulcer is:
GERD
CMV
Herpes
long history of NSAID use

for the time being:
- quit smoking if a smoker
- stop OTC pain killers
- stop Aciphex and start Nexium 40mg once daily before breakfast
- less spicy food and less oily food
- weigh reduction if over weight

visit your treating physician and/or gastroenterologist for a follow up.

hope to answer your concern.
