Suggest Treatment For Dysfunction Of The Belch Reflex?
Is there any cure for dysfunction of the belch reflex? I am a 19-year-old, 5'10," 145 lb female with no significant medical history except that I have never been able to belch, except for on rare occasions accidentally. When I need to belch, it can be painful and is always associated with gurgling in my throat. This usually happens after large meals. I cannot drink carbonated drinks or anything similar.
Hi. Thanks for your query. Noted the history and understood the concerns. Belching is not a normal phenomenon that everyone experiences unless there is heavy meals and has entrapped air in stomach that needs escape. Hence there is no problem in having burps. But if there is pain and discomfort while passing a burp there can be problem. Hence I would advise you the following in such a situation: Stop taking any aerated drinks as these are not suitable for you. Take small and frequent meals so that the burping does not occur. Prevention is better than cure. Also on a safer side it is better to get the following investigations if the new habits do not help you with painful burps: Upper Gi Endoscopy. Bariun swallow and meal studies. Tests of stool. Tests of blood for diabetes. Further treatment is needed only if there is any positive findings.
